This beginner-friendly version implements standard piece movement, check, checkmate, the flying-General rule, and stalemate as a loss. Pieces sit on the 90 intersections. The river restricts Elephants and unlocks sideways Soldier moves; each General and Advisor remains inside its 3-by-3 palace.
Tournament repetition and chase adjudication can be nuanced. For a clear browser game, the third occurrence of the same position is an automatic draw, as are 60 consecutive half-moves without a capture.
